SUMMARY:Pioneer History of Mary Jane Champlin and Stewart Dickson
DESCRIPTION:Cheri Battrick\, who will be serving as the 2023-24 Historian for the Port St. Louis Camp of Daughters of Utah Pioneers\, is presenting the pioneer history of her 3rd great-grandparents at the May 2023 camp meeting. \nMary Jane Champlin lived at Hawn’s Mill and survived the massacre there on October 30\, 1838 along with the rest of her family. She was eight years old at the time. The Champlin’s story of survival is equaled by the survival story of Mary Jane’s future husband\, Stewart Dickson. \nStewart\, though living at Far West as a young boy with his family in 1838\, was innocently sent to Hawn’s Mill on the fateful day of the massacre by his parents in the company of an elderly neighbor to have some grain ground at the mill. \nThe stories of these two youth show the hand of the Lord in preserving some of those who were doing their best to follow the counsel of their prophet\, Joseph Smith Jr.\, in gathering to Missouri for the purpose of establishing Zion. The trials which prevented them from reaching that goal served to test them and try them. Mary Jane learned the importance of obedience which unfortunately was not the case with her future husband who later abandoned her\, their family\, and the Church. \nThis incredible story will cause you to look at the experiences of your own life differently\, and hopefully inspire you to always remain faithful.

SUMMARY:Official Fireside Launch of The Zion Story
DESCRIPTION:The Zion Story\, a historical preservation project of the Independence Missouri Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints\, is finally ready to launch! \nThe purpose of The Zion Story is to collect and archive personal histories\, photographs\, documents\, oral histories and even video histories of members of the Independence Stake so that future historians will be able to answer the question\, “How did we get from the Extermination Order to the New Jerusalem?” \nThe Zion Story Steering Committee has put together an evening you won’t soon forget where they will introduce this project\, share some of the stories of those who have been inspired to move to this region\, and inspire you with a slide show set to an original arrangement of Aaron Shust’s song\, “Zion” which will be performed by several Polynesian members of the Independence Stake. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to fill out a brief survey to indicate how they would like to assist with this project as well as what kind of help they need to put together their own “Coming to Zion” or “Living in Zion” story for The Zion Story archives. \nThe Zion Story currently has a partnership with the Midwest Genealogy Center in Independence for the purpose of recording and archiving oral histories as part of the Center’s “Tell Me A Story” oral history project. Those stories created specifically for The Zion Story will be archived both at The Zion Story Archive and also online at the Midwest Genealogy Center’s website in a special subset of the “Tell Me A Story” oral history collection called “Coming Home to Zion.”
